El río Escalda (Escaut, en francés, Schelde en holandés) nace en la Picardía, región del norte de Francia, a tan solo 95 m.s.n.m. y recorre 355 km, en su mayor parte en territorio de Bélgica hasta desembocar en el mar del Norte, ya en tierras holandesas. Como puede pensarse, con tan escasa pendiente, es un río que fluye mansamente por una extensa planicie. En el mapa el Escalda es el río de
